Organic Coffee

Fri, Oct 2, 2015

Coffee is one of the largest and most important tropical commodities traded worldwide, with over 12 billion pounds of coffee produced annually. Meeting such demand is not easy to achieved. Chemicals and pesticides were necessary to increase production and efficiency. However, these chemicals harm the soil, increase risk of wildfire, pollute water supplies, expose farmers to toxic substances and alter the taste of coffee.

Recently, coffee consumers have become more educated; they are demanding descriptive information concerning the coffee’s origin, region, variety, altitude, processing method and any social or environmental issues related to its cultivation and supply chain. Coffee drinkers are requesting transparency and traceability; they want to feel free of guilt and drink something they can feel good about.

This increasing consumer awareness has led coffee growers and farmers to develop more conscious and eco-friendly practices free of any artificial substances that can harm the environment and damage our health. They are producing organic coffee.

In order to be label “organic” an international agency must certified that at least 95% of the beans are grown without synthetic chemical fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides or any aid of artificial substance, which means cleaner air, land and water, and ultimately better coffee. Organic coffee is grown with compose and organic pest control procedures. It is cultivated the natural way, under shade of lush trees, which replenish the soil with rich nutrients, provides a home for plants and animals and keeps the ecosystems alive.
